Redbank Summerholm Silent Flyers

Sunday Flying at Springfield

Club members can assist with advice tuition to new flyers

Due to extensive re-development of the Redbank Plains Recreational Reserve, on August 18th 2016 the RSSF moved to a new flying field, (a former landfill site) adjacent to Nev Smith Drive, Springfield. This is not a public park and has no public access. The RSSF club has the permission of CASA and the Ipswich City Council to fly at both the Springfield flying site and the Redbank Plains Recreational Park .

Prior to the RSSF flying at Redbank Plains Recreational Park, the Moreton Region Sports Soaring Association (MRSSA) had been flying at the Redbank Plains Recreational Park for many years. They now fly at Munbilla

The RSSF club also fly near Laidley for slope soaring and thermal gliding. This site is on private property and access is arranged on request for members and their guests only. Anyone else flying there would be trespassing.

We welcome expressions of interest from persons wanting to fly gliders or sport electrics and take part in Club activities. Membership is selective and not automatic. Preference is given to applications from experienced fliers with a reputation for safety and good airman-ship, and those genuinely wanting to be part of this Club and participate for the common good.

Flying model aircraft safely is a skill and a practical science. Those who wish to learn (young or old) can be provided with good advice and instruction by the Club. Like flying full sized aircraft, good eyesight and reasonably good health are prerequisites.

A membership form is available on the membership page.

What to expect when Flying at an RSSF Flying field:

  • Flying at Springfield usually starts as early as 7:30am , and usually wraps up by 11:00 (depending on the wind and the number of batteries people have), so if you wish to visit arriving relatively early lets you see a greater range of planes fly

  • A very friendly group of Electric Flying enthusiasts happy to chat about aircraft and their design

  • On Thursday morning, mostly Glider and slow electric Planes are flown, with multiple planes in the sky at once much of the time

  • On Sunday mornings there are generally a mix of glider flying, slow planes, and fast planes as there are fewer flyers and tend to be fewer planes in the sky at once

  • Usually out of courtesy, club members let new flyers, and flyers testing new planes have a little space to fly on their own or with few other planes in the air, this is to help new members grow their skills and allow members to trim new planes whiles the skies a quiet

  • Alternate Tuesday mornings are spent gliding at Readbank from about 9:00am - 12 noon and then the members adjourn to a cafe for lunch and lots of aircraft discussions

Club members were very sad to hear that our friend and former club president Ian Peters passed away 2nd March 2022. Please see the honour board.
