Editing Digital Images
Challenge 1: Powerpoint slide with an image and a quote
I have recently developed an interest in hiking and enjoyed my trips to the Northwest. During my hike in Mount Rainier, I enjoyed the beautiful views from the peaks and how serene, calming and inspiring this view can be. I thought there is a great parallel to the quote I chose and hiking. It takes courage to hike not just overcoming a fear of heights, but also the strength to push forward through physical exhaustion. Once you reach the peak, it is such a great sense of accomplishment. For these reasons, I loved this picture and the quote from Walt Disney.
While editing the picture, I changed the temperature to make it a bit warmer to try and capture the feeling of a sunrise. The temperature was increased to give it a bit more contrast in the sun vs. the mountain background.
The next part was adding the quote. I chose to use the option of level 3, where the text blended with the background and not have a separate text box effect. I cut and paste the quote chosen. The font size and color were edited. The quote and the person who made the quote were in different boxes, so they could be edited separately to create a different effect for each of them. Finally, I chose to add a shadow effect to the quote.

As I was thinking of sunrise in the previous picture, it automatically made me think of coffee. There are very few things that bring us as much joy at sunrise like a nice hot cup of coffee. So, I opted for this picture of a cup of coffee for the second challenge. We all enjoy the beautiful designs created by the baristas at the coffee shops, so I wanted to display one of them.
The editing technique I chose for this challenge was the pop out option. I first selected a picture of a nice cup of coffee with a good contrasting background. Then I made a copy of the picture.
To the first picture, the image was cropped in the trapezoid shape and cut out to only use the bottom half with the saucer and table.
To the second copy of the picture, the background was removed. This was tricky as in trying to keep only the coffee cup, you need a steady hand to trace out the outline of the portions of the cup that I wanted. As you can see in the picture above, there were a few spots of brown that I had a hard time tracing out of the background.
I liked this editing technique as it provides that 3D view of the coffee cup and makes it more inviting to the viewers.

Reflections:
Editing digital images has been both fun and challenging. It requires a great amount of creativity and patience. I learned a lot of new techniques to edit images that I had no idea was possible and think they would be a great addition to my work in the future. Simple options like adjusting the color, shadows, tranparency are easy and effective ways to improve the picture qualities. In addition, using techniques like pop out, sketch and different options of cropping also help enhance the messages we are tryng to convey with images.
