Use of Images in Online Learning
This exercise is based on the article “The Use of Images in Online Learning: A Qualitative Content Analysis by Jason D. Bader, Chareen Snelson, and Patrick R. Lowenthal”. This article looks at different ways to analyze images in online learning.
The online book that I chose is "Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology: A practical approach". This book describes how to perform obstetric ultrasound. It includes the basic principles of ultrasound, how to obtain images in obstetrics and how to identify normal vs abnormal anatomy. It is meant for anyone performing obstetric ultrasound (radiologist, maternal fetal medicine/obstetricians, sonographers, midwife or nurse practitioners).
I tried to find a variety of images that utilized as many categories as possible. My results were very different from the article. I had 97% of educational images and no decorative images, while the article had majority of images affordance and equal educational and decorative. This could be due to to source book that I selected. This was a textbook on obstetric ultrasound and since there were so many educational images, the authors may have tried to minimize all other images to avoid cognitive overload.
