Stone Memory
Project Background
Stone Memory is a community exhibition space designed to preserve and reinterpret the historical memory of Kota Malawati. The project explores how architecture can transform cultural identity into a spatial experience through material, atmosphere, and movement.
The design was developed around the idea of stone as a representation of permanence, protection, and historical continuity. Instead of directly recreating historical structures, the project translates the emotional qualities of fortifications into a contemporary architectural language.
Original Design Concept
The main design approach focused on using stone as the primary architectural element. The heavy and monolithic character of stone creates a sense of permanence, reflecting the historical significance of Kota Malawati. The building uses controlled openings, carved spaces, and changes in light and shadow to create a journey of discovery and reflection.
The building form was developed through the idea of carving and extracting spaces from a solid stone mass. This creates a balance between enclosed exhibition areas and moments of openness.
The spatial sequence was designed to create an emotional journey. Visitors move through compressed and open spaces, experiencing changes in scale, lighting, and atmosphere.
The project successfully translates historical memory into an architectural experience through the use of stone, massing, and atmosphere.
The use of stone creates a strong sense of permanence and connects the building to the idea of historical preservation.
The relationship between light, shadow, and enclosure creates a reflective environment suitable for an exhibition space.
Limitations & Areas for Improvement
Although the original design focused strongly on material and atmosphere, further exploration was needed to improve environmental performance, particularly in terms of daylight control, natural ventilation, and tropical climate response.
The original design creates a strong contemplative experience, but opportunities remain to develop more interactive community spaces where visitors can gather, pause, and engage with the surroundings.
The heavy and monumental character of the design creates a strong identity, but further refinement could improve flexibility and openness while maintaining the original concept of memory and permanence.
The original Stone Memory proposal established a strong conceptual foundation by connecting architecture, material, and historical memory. However, reflection on the design process revealed opportunities to strengthen environmental strategies, user experience, and community engagement. These identified limitations became the foundation for the AI-assisted redesign process, where Artificial Intelligence was used as a tool to explore alternative solutions while preserving the original design intention.
