Evaluating the Role of AI in Architectural Design Development
The AI-assisted redesign process transformed Stone Memory from a conceptual exploration of historical memory into a more environmentally responsive and community-focused architectural proposal. Through AI exploration, new possibilities were identified while maintaining the original design intention of stone as a representation of permanence and memory.
AI WORKFLOW
Throughout the design process, Artificial Intelligence was used as a supporting tool to expand exploration and generate alternative solutions. AI assisted in analysing design weaknesses, developing concepts, exploring material expressions, and visualising possible architectural outcomes.
However, AI did not replace the role of the architect. The final decisions were guided by architectural judgement, site understanding, user needs, and the original intention of creating a meaningful connection between memory and place.
AI allowed rapid exploration of multiple design possibilities that would have taken longer through traditional methods. Different approaches to massing, material expression, and spatial atmosphere could be tested and compared.
AI helped identify weaknesses within the original Stone Memory proposal, particularly in environmental response, user interaction, and spatial flexibility. These observations guided the redesign process towards a more balanced architectural solution.
AI-generated imagery helped communicate abstract ideas such as atmosphere, light, material texture, and spatial experience. This improved the ability to visualise possible design directions before finalising decisions.
Although AI can generate visually convincing architectural ideas, it does not fully understand the cultural, historical, and social context of a site. Human interpretation was necessary to ensure that the redesign remained connected to Kota Malawati’s identity.
Some AI-generated solutions focused mainly on visual appearance without considering construction methods, material limitations, or practical implementation. Architectural evaluation was required to select realistic strategies.
AI has the ability to generate many different directions, but uncontrolled exploration could weaken the original concept. The design process required careful selection to ensure that stone remained meaningful as a representation of memory.
The integration of AI changed my understanding of architectural design development. Previously, the design process focused mainly on developing a strong concept and visual identity. Through AI-assisted exploration, I realised the importance of continuously questioning environmental performance, user experience, and adaptability.
AI encouraged a more iterative design process where ideas could be tested, evaluated, and refined. Instead of replacing creativity, AI became a tool that supported deeper exploration and encouraged more critical decision-making.
The Stone Memory 2.0 project demonstrates that successful architectural design requires a balance between technology and human judgement. AI can provide valuable opportunities for exploration, but architects remain responsible for interpreting information, understanding context, and creating meaningful spaces.
Moving forward, AI can become an important part of the architectural workflow when used responsibly. The architect’s role is not only to generate forms but to make thoughtful decisions that respond to people, culture, environment, and place.
