Long-term monitoring
Long-term monitoring
In 2003, our team started a long-term monitoring program to estimate the number of roller breeding pairs and assess breeding success in the Castro Verde SPA, in southern Portugal. Regular visits to all known nests allowed to estimate other important breeding parameters, such as laying dates, hatching success and fledgling success, which are key to assess the health status of this population and the long-term responses to global changes.Â
The Roller breeding population is estimated at less than 100 pairs, with 80% of the population breeding in the Castro Verde SPA.
