Nest-box provisioning and monitoring

In April 2026, all the boxes in the Castro Verde SPA were visited in order to assure its suitability to host breeding pairs further in the season. 2 boxes were destroyed during the winter due to the collapse of the walls where they were installed.

Between the end of April, and the mid of July, we monitored the nest-boxes to check for roller occupancy. Twenty-three boxes were successfully used by breeding rollers, a slight decrease comparing with the 2025 season (28 boxes). Several other boxes were occupied by other species, such as lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni), little owls (Athene noctua), scops owls (Otus scops) and starlings (Sturnus unicolor).
