Nest-box provisioning and monitoring

In April 2025, all the boxes in the Castro Verde SPA were visited in order to assure its suitability to host breeding pairs further in the season.

Between the end of April, and the end of July, we monitored the nest-boxes to check for roller occupancy. Twenty-eight boxes were successfully used by breeding rollers, an increase of 55% comparing with the 2024 season! Several other boxes were occupied by other species, such as lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni), little owls (Athene noctua), scops owls (Otus scops) and starlings (Sturnus unicolor).
