2025 Breeding Season
2025 Breeding Season
Nest-box provisioning and monitoring
In April 2025, all the boxes in the Castro Verde SPA were visited in order to assure its suitability to host breeding pairs further in the season.
Between the end of April, and the end of July, we monitored the nest-boxes to check for roller occupancy. Twenty-eight boxes were successfully used by breeding rollers, an increase of 55% comparing with the 2024 season! Several other boxes were occupied by other species, such as lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni), little owls (Athene noctua), scops owls (Otus scops) and starlings (Sturnus unicolor).Â
A total of 65 roller pairs were monitored throughout this season, and ringing efforts resulted in 197 ringed rollers!
GPS-tracking
Data from one of the individuals previously marked was obtained, providing crucial information about its migration and wintering periods. In this case, the individual left the breeding grounds in the 3rd of August 2024, and migrated for 195 days, reaching the last stop of its wintering grounds on the 13th of February. Spring migration was almost 4x faster, arriving in Castro Verde after 54 days, by the 7th of April 2025.
