2023 Breeding Season
2023 Breeding Season
Just prior to the start of the breeding season, 14 nest-boxes were provisioned in the Castro Verde SPA. Boxes were installed both in old buildings known to hold roller breeding pairs and on electric poles.
Nest-boxes are built with special materials in order to ensure thermal insulation, which is key in an area where temperatures often reach 40ºC!
Between May and July we have monitored the nest-boxes to check for roller occupancy. One was successfully used by rollers, while several others were occupied by lesser kestrels.
Five rollers were fitted with GPS loggers. These are programmed to deliver accurate (temporal and spatial) information on all movements during the breeding season. A less intensive program was set for the migratory and wintering period, when birds are expected to leave the study area and head to their wintering quarters in sub-Saharian Africa, likely reaching Angola or even Namibia!
