Physical Education Program
Ms. Meredith Barringer
The physical education program at Rolesville Elementary emphasizes individual skill development, personal fitness, and fun for all students. "Grades" for P. E. are based primarily on effort/participation, willingness to work with others, and preparedness for class (proper footwear and clothing). Students are assigned a grade of 4 - exceeds expectations, 3 - at grade level, 2 needs improvement, and 1 - needs a great deal of assistance to be successful.
The Program
At the K-2 level - Developmentally appropriate lessons are designed to allow students to explore, develop, and improve individual skills and abilities. Students are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of activities including ball skills, running/tagging/dodging, parachute activities, simple folk dances, tumbling, jump rope, fitness activities and more.
At the 3-5 level - Using the K -2 experiences as a base, students will engage in more advance team games and individual skills. Again. a variety of activities are offered that involve group competition, problem solving, self-evaluation, team building, and information that promotes a healthy lifestyle.
School P.E. Events
In addition to weekly P.E. classes. Rolesville students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of P.E. related school events. These include the following: GWIS (Girls and Women In Sport) where 4th and 5th grade girls have the opportunity to go to NC State Women's basketball game, First in Fitness Competition, Field Days, Community Health Fair, use pedometers in class, and the Fitnessgram Fitness Evaluation, where students get a computer print out on their performance in all five fitness components.
Volunteer Opportunities
Parents play an important role in the success of the P. E. program at Rolesville. Volunteer opportunities are listed throughout the school year in the school calendars, and updates sent home by the classroom teachers. One very important opportunity to spend time with your child and many others is Field Days each spring. Check your child's folder for volunteer requests for your help. All parents are welcome to volunteer or come and visit a P. E. class -- no experience necessary.
