ADVANCED PLACEMENT MUSIC FUNDAMENTALS AND EAR TRAINING - S1 & S2

Students must complete one year of RHS Band, Chorus, or Piano before electing this course. Music Theory examines the various parts, or elements, of music – melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, texture, form - and the ways in which these individual elements combine and interact to create a piece of music. This course is a college-level course in the fundamentals of music which involves learning major and minor scales, key signatures, intervals, triads, and other fundamental elements. It will also include the basics of aural and reading skills. Students will be required to sight-sing and perform rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic dictation. Students who choose to take the Advanced Placement course will be required to take and pay for the Advanced Placement Music Theory exam in the spring. Students who score a 3 or higher on the exam will have an opportunity to receive college credit. This choice is dependent upon the college or university the student attends.

This course is the first of two introductory, college-level courses in the fundamentals of music which involves learning major and minor scales, key signatures, intervals, triads, and other fundamental elements. This course will also include the basics of aural and reading skills. Students will be required to sight-sing and perform rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic dictation. This is the first of two Music Theory courses offered through the Early College Experience Program at the University of Connecticut.
*Students who successfully meet the expectations of the Early College Experience requirement will earn 3 college credits (MUSI 1011 Fundamentals/Ear Training I) from the University of Connecticut. Students are charged per UCONN credit plus a processing fee per course. Billing is handled by UCONN.
