Arcola

Sometime around 1870, as a result of a suggestion made by Mr. Edward D. Easton, the name Redmills was changed to Arcola. The name was taken from a town in Italy which was the scene of one of Napoleons victories. Interestingly, another close by town was Lodi.

Red Mill, the saw and grist mill built in 1746 on the Saddle River at Arcola, was owned by “King Jacob” Zabriskie, one of many Zabriskies who were descended from Albert Zaboroweski.

Easton Water Tower is a historic structure located in Paramus, New Jersey, and originally used as the housing for a water pump on the estate of businessman Edward D. Easton. It was built in 1899 and is located next to the Saddle River at the intersection of Red Mill & Paramus roads.

Arcola Amusement Park on the Paramus/Rochelle Park border was built along the Hudson River trolley line in the Arcola section of Rochelle Park/Paramus in 1926, but burned down just a few years later in 1929 and never rebuilt. The property became a social club swimming pool that survived 41 years.

Arcola Airport, Was owned by Maria M. Ditmars and operated by F. H. Trautwein on land previously used as the Trautwein Farm located on Passaic Street (across from today's SHOP RITE). It served as both transportation to and from New York City and as a place where pilots and daredevils could put on stunt flying shows for spectators. It closed in 1932.

Corkery's Tavern - During the 1840's, Samuel Richard Taylor built a hotel at Arcola that became the "community center" for the people living in that part of the township. Taylor operated this hotel for only a few years then becoming the Arcola House, operated by James Corkery until the property was purchased by Denison M. Easton. It is substantiated from Bergen County Atlas's, that the present Arcola Methodist Episcopal Church parsonage was originally Corkery's Tavern.
