Reinforcing Entrepreneurial Universities by Design:
An evaluation of pedagogies, practices and perspectives
The presence of enterprising activity, which now permeates universities globally, leaves a notable legacy and impact on both individuals and institutions. In the context of the changing nature of universities, Crammond discusses from his first book the progression of enterprise and entrepreneurship education, and conceptualises ‘best practice’ with the aim of enhancing teaching and support for entrepreneurs. Developing this discussion towards how educators approach teachable entrepreneurship, and assessing both the purpose and relevancy of universities today, Crammond also outlines from his follow up title applied educational ideals and philosophies to the enterprising classroom, relevant stakeholder theory and appreciation, and the cultural impact of entrepreneurship from idea generative and developmental settings. This leads to the introduction of a new ‘University Model for Entrepreneurship’ (UM4E). This event highlights the multifaceted nature of embedded entrepreneurship within institutions – pedagogically, philosophically, socially, and structurally.

Business schools and investment programs around the world are key to unlocking transformative social change. Why? Because what they choose to nurture has a huge impact on society. Right now, most of the focus is on helping individuals take their business idea and turn it into profit. But what if instead they empowered those people and organizations that want to help society? What if there were programs aimed at nurturing enterprises that move hearts and minds rather than emptying pockets? Join three experts as they explore why we need to fundamentally rethink the role of entrepreneurship and how it can be used as a force for good.

Over the past 10 years in academia, where I have been involved in module, programme, or research activity concerning enterprise and entrepreneurship, I have appreciated the importance of practical and purposive processes or networks towards skills development and, whether it be individual or company-based, entrepreneurial outcomes.
These processes or networks involve implementing logical class or non-class based approaches, activities, and initiatives which heighten meaningful engagement and build enterprising legacies for students and staff alike. However, (1) what processes and principles for meaningful engagement can be prescribed? Also, (2) who is, or should be, involved?
In this article, I reflect on my own experiences, the current work of my own institution (the University of the West of Scotland) and refer to my research of entrepreneurship and higher education.

Within the higher education sector, course offering, purpose and competition, and the need to engage with enterprising and innovative industry, is at the forefront of the minds of senior management. Therefore, recognising key individuals who support a university’s operations is vital. Acknowledging Advance HE's UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) 2011, Dr Robert Crammond identifies eight entrepreneurial personalities which an enterprising university must possess when developing relevant skills and courses, and responding to the needs of students, staff and partners.

In their quest to build enterprising educational environments, institutions engage with industry and (international) governmental bodies through policy. This can take the form of sharing good or best practice towards the enterprising classroom and building entrepreneurial legacies within the university.

This can be to enhance their teaching, align with course, programmatic, or faculty objectives, or to develop within their research networks.
