It provides services that are tailored to meet the needs of those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness by utilizing a comprehensive referral system in collaboration with community services providers.

Community Housing Resource Center: 540-266-7551 |Administered by Council of Community Services. Assists individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Participants must be referred by Central Intake. | Mondays through Fridays 8:15 am to 4:30 pm. Appointments required.

Family Promise of Greater Roanoke: 37 East Clay Street, Salem, 24153 | 540-444-7374 | info@familypromiseroanoke.org | Provides a variety of strategies to keep families from becoming homeless, including formal diversion programs with government funding, rental assistance, landlord mediation, and other community-based approaches.

Freedom First Credit Union: 5002 Cross Road NW, Roanoke, 24012 | 540-389-0244 | counseling@roanokefec.org | Freedom First works with the Financial Empowerment Center to offer counseling and support for individuals wanting to pursue financial goals, including in the area of housing. Membership is open to anyone who lives, works, goes to school, or worships within the service area.

Habitat for Humanity: 3435 Melrose Avenue NW, Roanoke, 24017 | 540-344-0747 | Affordable housing for qualified families, who assist with building or renovating homes for themselves and others. Check eligibility options and learn full program information here

Salvation Army: 724 Dale Avenue SE, Roanoke| 540-343-5335 | Crisis case management with short-term emergency financial assistance for utilities, as well as a seasonal Wood Share program for heating homes.

STEP, Inc.: 200 Dent Street, Rocky Mount, 24151 | 540-483-5142 |felecia.watkins@stepincva.com | Rapid re-housing program: emergency financial assistance to homeless veterans, individuals and families. Homelessness prevention: provides financial assistance and on-going case management services for low-income families and individuals who are at risk of losing their home (rentals only).

Total Action for Progress (TAP): 302 2nd Street SW, Roanoke, 24011| (540) 283‑4847  | TAP's Eviction Prevention Program helps households in the City of Roanoke that had a loss of income due to COVID-19. Call before visiting to receive a list of items that they will need to bring when applying for assistance. To receive assistance, you must be at or below 80% of the Area Median Income. Assistance is available for payments past due as of April 1, 2021, and onward.

TAP also offers Housing counseling with home-buying assistance or support to avoid foreclosure; limited down payment assistance. Support for veterans who are homeless or in danger of eviction.
