Here are some pieces and artists that are inspirational to us. We suggest listening to lots of reference pieces to get a feel on how to arrange instrumentation, create good melodies, convey certain moods, etc.
The one below is, overall very simplistic. The melody isn't too crazy. It is simple, but it works.
Notice that the one below has a really simple chord progression that just repeats over and over again. Your compositions don't have to be complex. In fact, keep it simple because simple is catchy.
Please don't disregard classical music. Yes, it's not the most fun genre to listen to, but realize that those pieces are "classic" for a reason. They stick with us and have been listened to for hundreds of years. They're the most fundamental reference pieces to use because they're so infamous. These baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary "masters" are masters for a reason.
