TR BACKPACK PROGRAM (Service Harbor City and Sherwood Elementary Schools)
More than 21 million children qualify for free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. In Brevard County, 45% of public school students qualify. For many of these children, school meals may be the only meals they eat. What happens when they go home over the weekend?
The TR Backpack Program was designed to supplement meals for these children - who depend on their school for breakfast and lunch, during the school week. This program provides nutritious, child-friendly, easy-to- prepare food to chronically hungry children.
Lack of access to a nutritious and adequate food supply has implications not only for the development of physical and mental disease, but also behavior and social skills. What a wonderful program for children which:
By our partnering with school staff and the local school system, the backpacks are distributed to children in need through the school system—discreetly—each Friday afternoon or before a long holiday weekend.
Our program strives to provide the food they need to be healthy, happy and successful.
