This week will focus on the causes and effects of climate change. You will play a fun board game to learn facts and statistics about the environment.
Agenda:
Google Classroom Warm-Up: What do you already know about climate change, its causes, and its effects?
Create a game question of your own.
It can be a short answer, true/false, or multiple-choice question (with four options - A, B, C, D)
The question should illustrate a fact or statistic about climate change or human influence on the environment.
You may use your Chromebook to research
You may create more than one question if you choose.
Write your question on the small paper card your educator gives you, and write your answer on a slip of paper to give to your educator.
You may need to create one copy of your question card for each group.
Rules of the game:
To begin, each student will place their game piece on the “START” square. The objective of the game is to reach the finish line first.
You will take turns choosing a question from a question deck and answering it. If you answer correctly, you may roll the die and move your piece forward the corresponding number of spaces. If you answer incorrectly, you do not move.
Don't worry if the questions seem hard. They are designed for you to learn facts about climate change that you don't already know.
If you draw the question you wrote, you must pick a different card.
Occasionally, you will land on a “Chance” spot. You must select a card from the Chance deck and follow the instructions on the card (an action that positively affects the environment = move forward; an action that negatively affects the environment = move back.) Roll the die to determine how many spaces to move forward or back.
The game ends either (1) when the first person reaches the end, or (2) when everyone reaches the end, depending on how much time is available.
Optional activity for at home: Print out the game board and cards (see below) and play it with your friends and family!
Another optional activity: Check out the climate change-themed games at NASA's Climate Kids website.
