This week, you will learn about renewable and nonrenewable resources, fossil fuels, and the four (yes, four!) Rs.
Agenda:
- What are renewable and nonrenewable resources? Check out this article: Nonrenewable and Renewable Energy Sources - KQED Science
- Find a partner and sit together. Your task is to make a mind map to show examples of renewable and nonrenewable resources. To do so, you'll need to install MindMup 2.0 for Google Drive. Your educator will show you how.
- Read this article about fossil fuels. Be sure to check out the video as well! Fossil Fuels - Student Energy
- Go over the four R's (refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle) as a class.
- With the same partner you were with before, "partner read" the following articles. Decide who will read the plastic use article and who will read the buying local article. After reading, take turns explaining what you just read to your partner.
- Thinking about the four R's and the resources it takes to grow and package food, work with your partner to make a photo collage of a day's worth of meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and at least one snack) with the least amount of waste possible. Don't forget to consider the burning of fossil fuels that is often needed to transport food from the farm to the grocery store. Also, remember to think about how the food would be served or packaged for a day at school. For example, which is the most eco-friendly way to pack a sandwich: soft plastic wrap or a reusable container? Bonus points if you make your meals zero waste!
- Make your photo collage here: https://www.photocollage.com/
- You'll have to download photos from the web to upload to the photo collage. Ask your educator if you need help.
- Upload your completed photo collage to Google Classroom.
Alternative/Extra Activity: Check out "What Do You Need to Grow Food?" - Peace Corps
Optional activity for at home: Make the meals you planned and share them with your family! Be sure to take some photos to share with the club next week.
