All Beta Pokémon are born with the BETA title, which is visible within your Pokémon's inventory listing. (Ex. LVL5 PKMN [β-Honoguma | Default | BETA])
Non-beta Pokémon, such as Bulbasaur, can only get the BETA title through being born from another Pokémon with the BETA Title or added with the use of a special item (Not revealed yet).
Within ONLY the Beta-Pokédex pages, a [ β ] beside a name represents a non-beta Pokémon with the BETA Title.
For example:
"Ivysaur [ β ]" is the same thing as "[Ivysaur | Default | BETA]"
It is an Ivysaur with the BETA title.
The BETA title allows the Pokémon to access any Beta's within their lineage, such as
- Evolving into a Beta Pokémon
- Devolving into a Beta Pokémon
- Showing design elements of a Beta through the intermediate trait.
Examples:
[Pikachu | Intermediate | BETA] would be able to show Gorochu design elements with the intermediate trait.
[Ivysaur | Default | BETA] would be able to evolve into Beta Venusaur
[β-Nyōsuka | Default | BETA] would be able to devolve into [Poliwhirl | Default | BETA]
Additionally, All betas that never got finalized into an official Pokémon (Such as β-Kakoroach, β-Cervarro, etc) will have a "β-" next to their name to inform the user that they are a Beta Exclusive Pokémon. Any who got finalized into an official Pokémon, such as Beta Venusaur -> Venusaur, will NOT have this symbol.
To evolve a Beta, you must use a Prehistoric Fragment.

Grass
Evolves from: Chikorita [ β ]
Evolves into: Meganium [ β ]
An early version of Bayleef.
Also known as "Blossomole"
First stage Grass starter. Seemingly being based after the idea of a Chikorita "blossoming". This is where Meganium gets its antennae.
Fire

Water
Evolves from: β-Kurusu

Water
Evolves from: β-Akua
Also known as "Aquaria"
Final stage Water starter. Scrapped Pokémon based on a plesiosaurus with three horns and a gem necklace around its neck. Ended up being replaced with Feraligatr.
Electric
Evolves into: Flaaffy [ β ]
An early version of Mareep.
Has a more light bulb-shaped tail orb. Interestingly, the back sprite has pink hooves not seen on the front sprite, likely from an earlier design. Is also assigned a pink palette, much like Flaaffy.
Back Sprite
Flying
Evolves into: β-Bo-Bo
An early version of Hoothoot.
Also known as "Ho-Ho"
Lacks the tuft of fur at the base of the feet, and has a single black pendulum/clock hand-like tail feather instead of a brown feather duster. The face markings are also more akin to freckles, evoking the numbers circling a clock. A wavy back pattern can also be seen, with it perhaps later inspiring the chest pattern from Noctowl's final design.
Flying
Evolves from: Beta Hoothoot
An early version of Noctowl.
Has a design more akin to its pre-evolution, retaining the clock hand-like eyebrows and the overall body shape, though now longer, making it look like an egg timer.
Grass
Evolves into: Tangela [ β ]
Also known as "Tangel"
Scrapped Tangela pre-evolution. Essentially a tiny Tangela with messy hair. Notably, uses a green palette, instead of a blue one like Tangela's.
Grass
Evolves from: Tangela [ β ]
Also known as "Galanla"
Scrapped Tangela evolution. Essentially a massive wig with an impish grin. Tangela would only receive an evolution, Tangrowth, in Generation IV. Notably, uses a green palette, instead of a blue one like Tangela's.
Alt Design
Water OR Fire
Evolves into: Vulpix [ β ]
Also known as "Trifox"
Scrapped Vulpix pre-evolution which was originally created for Generation I. Essentially a smaller, cuter Vulpix with messier hair and only three tails. Typing is very likely a mistake caused by the Fire and Water types only having a one-byte difference in the code. The idea of a Vulpix pre-evolution would later return in concept art for Generation IV, only to be scrapped once again.
Back Sprite
Alt Design
Water Flying
Evolves from: Mantyke [ β ]
An early version of Mantine.
Has a slimmer, more kite-like design, with a more refined tail, no horns, wing-like gills, and an angelic front face. The back face, meanwhile, is more evil-looking, contrasting with the front face. The final design instead goes with a more standard-looking manta ray, though the eye markings on it may be a remnant from this early design. The later introduced Mantyke would end up actually featuring a face marking on its back, though that one is a smile instead of a grin.
Alt Design
Water
Evolves from: Qwilfish [ β ]
Scrapped Qwilfish evolution. Essentially a fat dopey-eyed sea mine-like fish with thick dull spikes, a large mouth, a lightning symbol on its forehead, power button-like eyes, and a stomach pattern as seen in its back sprite. Qwilfish's Hisuian variant in Legends Arceus would get an evolution in the form of Overqwil with a completely different, unrelated design.
Electric
Evolves into: Pikachu [ β ]
An early version of Pichu.
Has a more rounded design, with a straight tail and black feet. It's possible this early design was an attempt at reworking Pikachu's original daifuku-like design.
Normal
Evolves into: Beta Clefairy or Clefairy [ β ]
An early version of Cleffa.
Has a different ear design, with ear holes and no dark tips. The tail is also nubby instead of curled, and the curly hair here is instead a sort of horn, accentuating Cleffa's star shape.
Normal
Evolves into: Jigglypuff [ β ]
An early version of Igglybuff.
Sprites are similar to the final except for the touched-up face and the added tuft of hair.
Water Fairy
Evolves from: Azurill [ β ]
Evolves into: Beta Azumarill or Azumarill [ β ]
An early version of Marill.
Also known as "Mariru"
Pose was later used for the final Silver sprite. Is pink instead of blue, has a straight tail instead of an erratic one, a larger tail orb, and slightly smaller ears which have a slightly different design.
Water Fairy
Evolves from: Beta Marill or Marill [ β ]
An early version of Azumarill.
Uses an earlier design, with two tails, conjoined ears, and a different stomach pattern. Uses the back sprite of Hinaazu, as well as its palette, hence the odd color scheme. This palette was later repurposed as Azumarill's final shiny.
Water
Evolves into: Goldeen [ β ]
Also known as "Golppy"
Scrapped Goldeen pre-evolution which was originally created for Generation I. Essentially a smaller, cuter Goldeen with a spiraling horn and two small barbels.
Water
Evolves into: β-Heliomola or β-Ikari
Also known as "Manbo / Manboo 1"
A scrapped sunfish Pokémon with a small lure resembling a childish "hair swirl". Its name is clearly a placeholder, because as revealed in an interview Game Freak devs tend to use "[Basis][Evo Stage]" for Pokémon whose names haven't been finalized yet.
Water
Evolves from: β-Sunmola
Evolves into: β-Extremola
Name by @ShadowChromia
(Helios+Mola)
Water
Evolves from: β-Heliomola

Water
Evolves from: β-Sunmola
Evolves into: β-Gorutesu
Also known as "Anchorage"
A scrapped shark Pokémon whose tail is an anchor on a chain. Possibly reworked from Jagg, a cut shark Pokémon from Generation I. May have inspired Sharpedo from Generation III, which shares design similarities.
Water
Evolves from: β-Ikari or β-Tineel
Also known as "Grotess"
A scrapped Pokémon seemingly inspired by the gulper eel and possibly the viperfish, with a small head lure trademark of the anglerfish. Interestingly, this line may have actually intended to be a split one, simply using back-to-back evolutions as a placeholder. This would be supported by Manboo 1 resembling Ikari in terms of colors and spikes, and Manboo 1 resembling Gurotesu when it comes to the anglerfish inspiration. The lure/deep sea fish aspect may have ultimately been reworked into Chinchou and Lanturn.
Normal
Evolves into: Meowth [ β ]
Also known as "Koonya" and "Meowsy"
Scrapped Meowth pre-evolution which was originally created for Generation I. When compared to its cut Gen I equivalent, this one has a different ear design, a short curly tail instead of a long straight one, and a forehead adorned with a 5-yen coin instead of a kōban. It's likely the three coins seen here weren't meant to actually be levitating, and that it was either a way of showing it surrounded by coins, or a way for the artist to sketch potential alternate coin designs.
Bug
Evolves into: Paras [ β ]
Scrapped Paras pre-evolution. Essentially a tiny Paras living in a mushroom, likely inspired by the way some insects lay their eggs into fruits and the like.
Normal
Evolves from: Ditto [ β ]
Scrapped Ditto evolution. Essentially a Ditto with a spike on its head, fangs, and a ghoulish expression. Bears some slight resemblance to the Slime enemies from Dragon Quest, which incidentally also come in a stronger metal form.
Ground
Evolves into: Donphan [ β ]
An early version of Phanpy.
Also known as "Trunpet"
Has no pads on its ears and nose, and has a longer trunk.
Grass Psychic
Evolves into: Beta Sunflora or Sunflora [ β ]
An early version of Sunkern.
Grass Psychic
Evolves from: Beta Sunkern or Sunkern [ β ]
An early version of Sunflora.
Also known as "Sanii / Sunnee"
Sprites are similar to the final, though with a slightly different facial expression, no lines running though its face, a consistently smooth stem instead of one which fattening up into a body, a bud whose base more symmetrical, and "realistic" roots instead of feet-like ones.
Alt Design
Dark Normal
Evolves into: Beta Girafarig or Girafarig [ β ]
Also known as "Twinz"
Scrapped Girafarig pre-evolution. Essentially mischievous conjoined twin ghosts with ghastly spikes floating around them. This is where Girafarig gets its spikes.
Dark Normal
Evolves from: β-Tsuinzu
Evolves into: Farigiraf [ β ]
An early version of Girafarig.
Is depicted as a giraffe with a head on each opposite side of its body, akin to something like the Pushmi-Pullyu from Dr. Dolittle. The front head has two-horns and looks docile, while the single-horned back head has an evil grin. The "evil half" was later replaced by a standard backside with a small mischievous Chain-Chomp like tail. Even after being redesigned, this Pokémon would keep its palindrome name and contrasting typing (although with Psychic rather than Dark). The first half of the front sprite matches final.
Dark
Evolves into: β-Berurun
Also known as "Rinring"
A scrapped sleigh bell-themed cat Pokémon. The idea of a Dark-type feline Pokémon would later be revisited in Generation V with the Purrloin line, though without the bell theme.
Dark
Evolves from: β-Rinrin
Also known as "Bellboyant"
A scrapped bell-themed cat Pokémon. The idea of a Dark-type feline Pokémon would later be revisited in Generation V with the Purrloin line, though without the bell theme.
Water
Evolves from: Poliwhirl [ β ]
An early version of Politoed.
Has a cockier facial expression, a larger body, a different mouth design, no antenna, a stomach pattern more akin to the rest of the Poliwag line, and line markings on its knees and back. The back markings were reworked into spots, which were removed in the International releases.
Water
Does not evolve.
A scrapped Pokémon resembling the shell of both Slowbro (general anatomy) and Slowking (gem). Interestingly, while never seen in-game, several of Slowbro's Pokédex entries describe it as being capable of reverting back to a Slowpoke if its Shellder was ever to come off. The same canonically applies to Slowking, and interestingly enough, official artwork depicting such occurrences reveal that the Shellder itself remains unchanged. Doesn't have any direct relation to either the Slowpoke or Shellder lines.
Poison
Evolves into: Grimer [ β ]
Also known as "Grimey"
Scrapped Grimer pre-evolution. Essentially a tiny Grimer suckling on a small shiny pacifier.
Normal
Evolves into: Ponyta [ β ]
Also known as "Minicorn"
Scrapped Ponyta pre-evolution which was originally created for Generation I. Essentially a smaller, cuter Ponyta with less fire overall.
Bug Flying
Evolves from: Ledyba [ β ]
An early version of Ledian.
Also known as "Tripstar"
Has a design more akin to its pre-evolution, retaining the eyes and overall body shape, though the round spots are now star-shaped. This likely stems from a pun, as the word hoshi can refer to either a spot or a star. The final games would instead opt for a humanoid, Super Sentai or Tokusatsu Heroes-inspired design, though the star connection was retained, with both it and Ledyba being known as the "Five-Star Pokémon", and with the Pokédex stating Ledian draws its strength from starlight.
Fire
Evolves into: Growlithe[ β ]
Also known as "Puddi"
Scrapped Growlithe pre-evolution. Essentially a tiny pooch with a swirly tail and straight black ears.
Psychic
Evolves from: Eevee [ β ]
An early version of Espeon.
Sprites were redrawn for the final; poses are the same. Seemingly has two separate tails instead of a single forked one. Is assigned a yellow palette instead of a purple one, perhaps in an attempt to better contrast with Umbreon.
Poison
Evolves from: Eevee [ β ]
An early version of Umbreon.
This early typing implies that Umbreon's circular patterns may have been inspired by the blue-ringed octopus, a highly venomous species found in the oceans near Japan. Sprites were redrawn for the final; poses are the same. Despite the type change, even to this day some of Umbreon's Pokédex entries make mention of it spraying poisonous sweat from its pores, either a reference to or a leftover from its original typing.
Grass
Evolves from: Eevee [ β ]
An early version of Leafeon.
Normal Flying
Evolves into: Doduo [ β ]
Also known as "Hina-zu" and "Chiks"
Scrapped Doduo pre-evo. Essentially a chick with three heads whose fuzz serves as a nest.
Fighting
Evolves into: β-Kapoeraa or Hitmontop [ β ]
An early version of Tyrogue.
Also known as "Gongu / Gohng"
Has a simpler design with gloves instead of hands, a helmet with bear-like ears instead of simple ear pads, no crest, and no pants. Is assigned a brown palette, much like Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, as opposed to a faded purple one.
Fighting
Evolves from: β-Barukii or Tyrogue [β]
An early version of Hitmontop.
Has a similar design, although literally flipped upside down. Its third leg was turned into a spiked tail, its legs were made slimmer, and its face was moved to where its single eye was located. Is assigned a brown palette, much like Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, as opposed to a faded purple one.
Alt Design
Ice Flying
Does not evolve.
An early version of Delibird.
Has no eyebrows, a Santa "hat" on its head, and a heart-shaped stomach spot.
Grass Flying
Evolves into: β-Poponeko or Skiploom [ β ]
An early version of Hoppip.
Also known as "Lefmew"
Has slightly thicker leaves, a more stereotypical cat face, a longer tail, and no feet. Its body is also solid black, due to palette limitations.
Grass Flying
Evolves from: β-Haneko or Hoppip [ β ]
Evolves into: β-Wataneko or Jumpluff [ β ]
An early version of Skiploom.
Also known as "Dandemew"
Has more cat-like features, no feet, and a slightly different flower design. Its body is also solid yellow, due to palette limitations.
Alt Design
Grass Flying
Evolves from: β-Poponeko or Skiploom [ β ]
An early version of Jumpluff.
Also known as "Cottomew"
Once again has more cat-like features, no feet, and no arms. Its head cotton tuft also has a more hot-air balloon-like design, instead of just balloon-like. Is assigned a pink palette instead of a blue one.
Normal
Evolves into: Mr. Mime [ β ]
An early version of Mime Jr.
Scrapped Mr. Mime pre-evolution which reuses the name originally assigned to it. Essentially an egg-shaped little dancing jester. Its egg-like design was perhaps inspired by the concept of "egg registery".
Fire
Evolves into: Magmar [ β ]
An early version of Magby.
Has a spikier head, a different facial expression, and a stomach pattern more akin to Magmar's.
Electric
Evolves into: Electabuzz [ β ]
An early version of Elekid.
Also known as "Elebaby"
Has a more baby-like design, with a cuter face, no arms, no lightning chest pattern, and a different horn design.
Alt Design
Normal Flying
Evolves from: Farfetch'd [ β ]
Also known as "Madame"
Scrapped Farfetch'd evolution. Essentially an elegnt swan/goose holding a wild onion. Given its elegant name, appearance, and pose, it may have been based on masquerade dancers.
Water Fire
Does not evolve.
Also known as "Bomseel"
A scrapped dual Water/Fire Pokémon resembling a circus seal balancing a magma ball on its nose.
Alt Design
Grass Poison
Evolves from: Weepinbel [ β ]
Also known as "Belmitt"
Scrapped Weepinbell branched evolution, meant to be a parallel to Bellossom. The "mitt" from its name may hint at a baseball theme, with this Pokémon somewhat resembling a pitcher, which would make sense given how the Bellsprout line is based on pitcher plants.
Electric
Evolves into: β-Raitora
Also known as "Tigrette"
Scrapped tiger Pokémon which was originally created for Generation I. Essentially an adorable round feline which appears to be based on tiger-shaped clay bells, with the crack from which the bell can be heard becoming the thunder symbol on its belly.
Electric
Evolves from: β-Kotora
Also known as "Electiger"
Kotora's evolution, which was also originally created for Generation I, and retains the clay bell basis.
Dark Flying
Evolves into: Honchkrow [ β ]
Front sprite is very similar to the final, albeit with a longer tail, different eyes, a much witchier crest, and one less toe on each foot.
Alt Design
Alt Design
Normal
Evolves into: Ambipom [ β ]
An early version of Aipom.
Ghost
Evolves into: β-Kyonpan
A scrapped Pokémon based on both a voodoo doll and a bear. Was designed after its signature move, Nail Down, a predecessor to Curse.
Ghost
Evolves from: β-Norowara
A scrapped Pokémon based on both a jiangshi (a vampire-like mythological creature from Chinese mythology) and a panda. Given how Norowara resembles a teddy bear, then perhaps Kyonpan was based on a plushie, which would be supported by a cut item pairing related to sewing. If that's the case, then this line may have inspired the Shuppet line from Generation III, which is also based on haunted toys.
Alt Design.
Normal
Evolves from: Chansey [ β ]
An early version of Blissey.
Normal
Evolves from: Lickitung [ β ]
Scrapped Lickitung evolution. Essentially a large Lickitung seemingly styled after snake charmers, with a turban of sorts, a curly mustache, and using its tongue like both a flute and a snake.
Bug Poison
Evolves into: β-Tsuuheddo
An early version of Spinarak.
Also known as "Spidette"
Alt Design.
Bug Poison
Evolves from: β-Kokumo
An early version of Ariados.
Also known as "Tuhedd"
Has a design more akin to its pre-evolution, retaining the beady eyes, the early leg design, and the more overt face pattern on its abdomen.
Dragon Water
Evolves from: Seadra [ β ]
An early version of Kingdra.
Was made less dragon-like, and more akin to a leafy seadragon.
Normal
Evolves from: Porygon [ β ]
Evolves into: Porygon-Z [ β ]
An early version of Porygon2.
Has a more lion-like design, as opposed to a smoother interpretation of Porygon's design.
Water
Evolves into: Beta Octillery or Octillery [ β ]
An early version of Remoraid.
Remoraid, but with a more gun-like design. The idea for a fish-gun hybrid may have been taken from the Gunfish, an enemy from Pulseman (another Game Freak title), which itself may have been inspired by the archerfish. The front half of the design was kept, albeit with smaller pupils, but the back half was made more fish-like.
Alt Design
Water
Evolves from: Beta Remoraid or Remoraid [ β ]
An early version of Octillery.
Octillery, but with a more tank-like design, complete with a little helmet. The final design instead goes with a more standard-looking octopus, though it would keep a vague tank theme, with the mouth serving as the tank gun and the tentacles evoking the treads.
Ice
Evolves into: β-Waaurufu
Also known as "Wolfman"
A scrapped Pokémon based on a mimic wearing a wolf pelt, making it look like a wolf itself, with its eyes poking out of its mouth and its hands emerging out of the fur.
Ice
Evolves from: β-Urufuman
Also known as "Warwolf" and "Wa-urufu"
Wolfman's evolution, with it now larger, its arms more defined and ending with claws.
Electric
Does not evolve.
An early version of Raikou.
Has a radically different design, with it depicting Raikou not as a tiger, but as a moody canine with spiky thunder-like hair. The battle scar-like body markings likely went on to inspire the final design's stripes.
Fire
Does not evolve.
An early version of Entei.
Has a radically different design, with it depicting Entei not as a lion, but as a cocky canine with fiery fur.
Water
Does not evolve.
An early version of Suicune.
Has a radically different design, with it depicting Suicune not as a leopard, but as a moppy canine with messy hair and a tail tied together with a gem, not unlike Zoroark's ponytail. Already has spots, and the wavy pattern on its legs likely went on to inspire the final design's flowing ribbons.
Alt Design
Dark
Evolves into: Weavile [ β ]
An early version of Sneasel.
Originally looked more like classical depictions of the Kamaitachi. The final games completely overhauled the design, but kept the brown palette.
Ground Flying
Evolves into: Gliscor [ β ]
An early version of Gligar.
Uses an earlier design, an extra set of arms, segmented limbs, and smaller pincers/stinger. It also uses a red and grey palette, instead of a pink and blue one. It vaguely resembles a Facehugger from the Alien series.
Normal
Evolves into: Ursaring [ β ]
An early version of Teddiursa.
Uses Honooguma's front and back sprites as a base. Design is close to final, albeit with a yellow palette instead of a light brown one, a missing muzzle highlight, and a different forehead pattern.
Normal
Evolves from: Sentret [ β ]
An early version of Furret.
Uses an earlier design, with a bulbous tail more reminiscent of Sentret's.
Water
Evolves from: Chinchou [ β ]
An early version of Lanturn.
Gold sprite has a different design which depicts Lanturn generally chubbier and with a more beluga-like head.
Water
Evolves into: Quagsire [ β ]
An early version of Wooper.
Gold sprite has a different design which depicts Wooper with a quadrupedal body shape, differently-shaped gills, and no markings on its chest.
Bug Rock
Does not evolve.
An early version of Shuckle.
Has a very differently-shaped shell, bearing close resemblance to a vase, as well as featuring a longer neck and thinner tentacles.
Alt Design
Normal
Evolves into: Dudunsparce [ β ]
An early version of Dunsparce.
Both sprites showcase much simpler designs, which appear to be closer to classical depictions of the Tsuchinoko. Lacks the wings and drill tail, and the blue stripes are instead small black spots. The eyes are also much simpler, and the Gold sprite features a blue tongue which is never seen anywhere else.
Bug Steel
Evolves from: Pineco [ β ]
An early version of Forretress.
Gold sprite is only a basic outline at this point.
Fire
Evolves into: Magcargo [ β ]
An early version of Slugma.
Has a different, more stereotypical "slug eyes", in addition to lacking the magma-themed bubbles and "drool" seen in the final sprite.
Ice Flying
Does not evolve.
An early version of Delibird.
Different head, beard, and wings.
Alt Design
