Richmond Primary Boy's Band

The Richmond Primary Boy's Band was organized in December of 1886.4 James Nephi Davenport led the band for many years.

"Grandpa Davenport organized the 1st Richmond Primary Boy's Band. He led the band playing his Fife. … He was a natural musician playing the Piccolo and many other instruments. He organized a band called the 'Richmond Primary Boy's Band.' There were 12 to 15 boys in the band, including two of his own sons. Over the years he trained many young men to play. They played all over Cache Valley area, and on the Logan Temple grounds. He led the band for many years until he died in his late 50s."2

Charles H. Skidmore wrote the following in his journal:

"Wednesday night I went to Sister Allsop's and practiced with the rest of the band, which was organized just before Christmas. Thursday night I went out to Brother Davenport's (a mile north of Richmond) to practice. I learned to play one tune, it making the fifth tune I could play on my flute. Practiced by a 'bitch' light on a mantelpiece on the north side of his front room. We had no sheet music, but played by ear."
