In John's early life, he and his brother Mangus bought a telegraph machine and taught themselves how to use the machine. They would both get jobs in the business, and John was first hired by Union Pacific to move out to Florence, Nebraska for a few years before moving back to Utah and working for the Salt Lake Transportation Co.
John Lars Halgren married Rozina Azilka Funk on Dec 11, 1894 in Cache County, Utah. Sometime before their marriage, John moved back to Richmond.
"John was the leader of the Richmond City Band, played key trombone, coronet, and clarinet well, and some piano. The band gave concerts every Saturday night and played for holidays and celebrations. On holidays, he would wake the town with his trumpet. He was given a gold medal when he retired as band leader. He loved storms, and took his son, Mark, out to see them. He wore a moustache. He was postmaster in Richmond 12-14 years. John was City Recorder at Richmond for several years, and ward or stake clerk in the church."
John Lars Halgren died Jan 7, 1927 in Richmond. He was buried in the Richmond Cemetery.
