The Prime Minister's Research Fellow's (PMRF) scheme was announced in the 2018-19 annual budget by the then finance minister Mr. Arun Jaitley. The scheme was originally established for a period of 5 years with the aim of "identifying 1,000 best B.Tech students each year from premier institutions and providing them facilities to do Ph.D in IITs and IISc, with a handsome fellowship". The scheme has undergone significant modifications over the past years. The latest guidelines about the scheme can be found at www.pmrf.in.
I was selected for the PMRF fellowship in August 2021 (cycle 7) through the direct entry mode, the same time when I was admitted as a doctoral student to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. The fellowship has helped me greatly overcome the financial hardship that Ph.D. students generally face during their research work. The contingency grant has helped in conference travels, and purchase of study material and equipments.
