Phonological awareness allows children to recognise and work with the sounds of spoken language. It starts with children being able to pick out rhyming words or hear the number of syllables (beats) in a word. Once they are confident with these skills, they move onto learning synthetic phonics, which is segmenting and blending the individual sounds in words. These stages of course are all the building blocks in creating a strong foundation for learning to read fluently.
