Developing a child's 'Number Sense' is vital to their success as a young mathematician. Loosely, this term means building their conceptual knowledge and understanding of number which will enable them to recognise/understand number relationships and solve mathematical problems (including those without a traditional/obvious algorithm or formula). The concept of the number is understood when children make connections between symbols, mathematical language, images and physical objects.
Overall, children with good 'Number Sense' are those who can:
mentally calculate with confidence and accuracy,
estimate or 'subitise',
recognise number as a composition of parts (place value, number bonds) and
problem solve.
These activities provide a range of ways to understand and memorise number bonds to 10. The number bond snap cards can be used to play Snap or pelmanism (memory game). To play Snap the cards are shared equally. The Joker card can represent any number. If two cards add up to 10 the first to shour 'Snap' claims all the cards on the pile. To play pelmanism, place all cards face down. Take it in turn to turn over two card. If they add up to 10 the player has won a 'pair'. The winner is the person to have the most pairs.
