For this project I decided to do research on Reykjavík, Iceland and my partner chose Egypt. I chose this location because on of my favorite artists, Laufey, was born here and talks highly about her experience growing up here. Although it is small, it is bustling with culture and people who are well versed in technology. I also have always wanted to see the Aurora Borealis ("The Northern Lights"), which can be seen from Iceland.
There is a phenomenon in Iceland called the "Midnight Sun." This is when the sun remains visible over the horizon for 24-hours during the months of late May to early August!
The current population is around 130,000-140,000. Sources differ because some do not include data from smaller towns.
Reykjavík has an oceanic climate, which means that it experiences colder winters, cooler summers, and has frequent precipitation. It has two major seasons, winter and summer. Winter is from November to April and Summer is from June to September (Weather Atlas, 2025).
The dominant language when settlers arrived was Old Norse, which was spoken in Norway at the time. Eventually, it evolved into Modern Icelandic. They also have a diverse minority population, so some settlements also speak English, Danish, and Nordic. English and Danish are taught in primary and secondary school.
The population is very homogenous, descending from settlers who arrived in 874 AD. A majority came from Norway, the rest coming from a Celtic background (Scotland, Ireland).
Iceland ranks among one of the laeding nations when it comes to internet usage. Their high-speed internet is supported by the government, enforced by the ability to provide many of their services online.
Because tourism is a big part of their economy, the use of apps and websites has also been encouraged by the government to help tourists book trips and explore the area.
Although the internet is a big part of the every day life in Iceland, they still have some remote areas that have limited internet, or do not have the high-speed that the more populated areas do.
Through this project, I learned how to use the SmartArt designs on Microsoft PowerPoint. Even though I used PowerPoint throughout high school and my first time through college, these were features that were not as easy to use, or at least I was not aware that they existed at the time. I learned how to collaborate effectively with my partner by meeting up and discussing the information we wanted to research so that the presentation could look more cohesive, instead of our facts being so different.
