For this project, I researched AI assisted 3D mammography, an emerging technology in the medical field. I created a PowerPoint presentation highlighting my research and the skills I have learned throughout this course. I then presented my findings to my classmates, explaining how this new technology will impact the medical field and the field of diagnostic imaging.
I chose this emerging technology because I am applying for the radiography program and learned about how it has improved over the years to do things that were only dreamt about only a couple decades ago. Breast cancer is also one of the leading cancers for cancer related deaths in women. Before 3D mammography in general, 2D mammography was used. Because of the delicate layers of breat tissue, 2D mammography had a harder time in identifying tumors or cancer in the breast.
In creating this presentation, I learned about the current status of AI assisted 3D mammography. Many hospitals have started to implement AI assisting software, especially starting this year. I also learned that while there are disadvantages, the results are favorable in that AI software was able to detect about 25% more cases than the average radiologist. I am still of firm belief though that AI should only be used as an assitive tool, rather than replacing human involvement.
A rose can be used to represent the difference between 2D and 3D mammography. 2D mammography creates a flat picture, making it difficult to see through the layers of the rose, whereas 3D mammography can show the different image "slices".
