ALGEBRA 1
THIS QUARTER'S ACTIVITIES
CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY
Students are not required to use a personal mobile phone, tablet, or computer during class. Mathematics will primarily be completed using paper and pencil and an approved calculator when appropriate.
Personal electronic devices may be used only when specifically authorized by the teacher for an instructional or school-related activity.
1. IN-CLASS PRACTICE — 15%
Students will regularly complete classwork designed to practice and reinforce the concepts taught during each lesson.
Students are expected to:
Attend class prepared to work.
Take notes and keep an organized mathematics notebook or binder.
Show mathematical work and reasoning.
Use an approved calculator only when permitted.
Complete assignments during the class period unless otherwise instructed.
Submit assigned work by the established deadline.
Classwork is practice toward mastery and represents 15% of the quarterly grade.
2. HOMEWORK & IXL PRACTICE — 15%
Homework reinforces the mathematics taught in class and prepares students for quizzes, tests, and the Algebra 1 EOC.
Homework may include:
Big Ideas Math assignments
IXL skills practice
Teacher-assigned review
EOC preparation
Big Ideas Math assignments will normally be posted through Schoology. Students are strongly encouraged to work the problems in their mathematics notebook before submitting answers online.
IXL practice will normally follow the lessons taught in class. Students should maintain written mathematical work in their notebook or binder rather than simply entering answers into the computer.
The goal of IXL is learning and mastery—not simply accumulating a SmartScore. Students should make a serious effort to correct mistakes and improve their understanding.
Homework and IXL together represent 15% of the quarterly grade.
3. QUIZZES — 20%
Short quizzes will be used throughout the quarter to determine whether students are ready to move forward.
Quizzes may assess:
Mathematical procedures
Problem solving
Vocabulary
Mathematical reasoning
Graphs, tables, and equations
Applications and word problems
Previously learned skills
Students should expect to show their work whenever appropriate.
Quizzes represent 20% of the quarterly grade.
4. MAJOR ASSESSMENTS — 50%
Major assessments provide the strongest evidence of a student's independent mastery of Algebra 1.
They may include:
Chapter Tests
District Topic Tests
Cumulative Tests
Mid-Year Assessments
EOC-style assessments
Other major assessments announced by the teacher
Tests may include material from previous lessons and chapters because Algebra 1 skills build upon one another.
Major assessments represent 50% of the quarterly grade.

DEADLINES & MISSING WORK
Students are expected to meet assignment deadlines.
Missing assignments negatively affect both learning and grades. Repeated missing or incomplete assignments may result in parent/guardian contact, an academic conference, intervention, or other appropriate action.
Students should not wait until the end of the quarter to complete missing work.
ALGEBRA 1 GOAL
The purpose of classwork, homework, IXL, and quizzes is to prepare students to demonstrate mastery independently.
Students should not think:
“How many points can I earn?”
They should think:
“Can I solve this problem by myself on a test and on the Algebra 1 EOC?”

HOMEWORK RULES
HOMEWORK RULES
Students will do online homework, which can be found in the student portal through Schoology.
Students must keep all homework work in their notebook binder.
Access to the textbook to the Student Portal: (http://www.dadeschools.net/students.asp)
Online homework will be assigned through the Schoology platform (entering Big Ideas Math), 5-day IXL practice (minimum 20 correct daily problems), and/or Khan Academy will be assigned for testing preparation. All this will have a weighted average of 30% of the quarterly grade.
The deadline for homework will be 2 days after the lesson has been taught (for GenEd students). Students with accommodations will have extended time to complete them (an additional day without penalty).

CLASSWORK RULES
Students will take notes in every class.
Students are responsible for writing the work of all problems done in the Big Ideas Math online homework (there will be random notebook checks).
Students must bring to class: a pencil, paper (graphing paper is recommended), and the required scientific calculator Texas Instrument TI-30xa (scientific). This will be the only calculator accepted for testing.
All notes must be kept in a binder or a Composition Notebook ($1.00 at Walmart). Graphing paper is recommended for graphing.
Classwork worksheets will be provided by the teacher and submitted on the same day. The grade for classwork is 30% of the quarterly grade.
