COLLEGE ALGEBRA  

THIS QUARTER’S ACTIVITIES

COLLEGE CREDIT COURSE

College Algebra is a College Credit Course with two important academic outcomes:

- Students who successfully pass the class will earn the high school mathematics credit required toward graduation.

- Students who pass the College Algebra Final Assessment—the equivalent of an End-of-Course (EOC) assessment—will also earn college credit.

Passing the class and earning college credit are separate outcomes. A student may earn the high school course credit without earning the college credit if the required passing score on the Final Assessment is not achieved.

Students are therefore expected to take all classwork, Skills Practice, quizzes, cumulative reviews, and major assessments seriously. These activities are designed to prepare students for both successful completion of the high school course and the College Algebra Final Assessment.

CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY

Students are not required to use a personal mobile phone, tablet, or computer during class. Mathematics will primarily be completed using paper and pencil and an approved calculator when appropriate.

Personal electronic devices may be used only when specifically authorized by the teacher. School-provided technology may be used for Khan Academy, Skills Practice, graphing activities, assessments, or other teacher-approved assignments.

1. IN-CLASS PRACTICE — 15%

Students will complete regular in-class practice involving algebraic calculations, equations, functions, graphs, mathematical modeling, reasoning, and problem solving.

Students are expected to:

- Maintain an organized mathematics notebook or binder.

- Write important definitions, formulas, examples, and procedures.

- Show all calculations and algebraic steps.

- Label graphs, tables, equations, and variables appropriately.

- Explain and interpret answers in the context of each problem.

- Participate actively in class.

- Submit assigned work by the established deadline.

2. HOMEWORK & SKILLS PRACTICE — 15%

Homework may include Khan Academy, teacher-assigned Skills Practice, worksheets, digital resources, Final Assessment preparation, and cumulative review.

Students should write their mathematical work in their notebook or binder, including equations, calculations, tables, and graphs when appropriate. An online answer alone may not be accepted as sufficient evidence of completed work.

Khan Academy and other Skills Practice assignments are intended to strengthen prerequisite skills, reinforce current lessons, and identify concepts that require additional practice. Students should concentrate on understanding the mathematics, learning from mistakes, and demonstrating continued progress toward mastery.

3. QUIZZES — 20%

Quizzes may include:

- Mathematical vocabulary and notation

- Algebraic procedures and calculations

- Equations and inequalities

- Functions and their representations

- Graphs, tables, and formulas

- Mathematical modeling and applications

- Interpretation and justification

- Previously learned concepts

- Final Assessment preparation

Students should be prepared to show their work, explain their reasoning, and interpret the meaning of an answer—not merely identify the correct answer.

4. MAJOR ASSESSMENTS — 50%

Major assessments may include:

- Chapter or Unit Tests

- District Topic Tests

- Cumulative Tests

- Mid-Year Assessments

- Standards-based assessments

- Projects or performance tasks

- Final Assessment practice tests

- The College Algebra Final Assessment

- Other major assessments announced by the teacher

College Algebra requires students to connect concepts across chapters and apply previously learned algebraic skills to new situations. Major assessments may therefore include cumulative material from earlier lessons and units.

FINAL ASSESSMENT AND COLLEGE CREDIT

The College Algebra Final Assessment is the culminating assessment for the course and serves a purpose similar to an End-of-Course assessment.

Students must earn the required passing score on this assessment to receive college credit. Passing the regular course earns high school credit, but college credit is awarded only when the Final Assessment requirement is successfully completed.

Because the Final Assessment may cover material from throughout the course, students should:

- Maintain complete and organized notes.

- Correct mistakes on assignments and assessments.

- Review previously learned concepts regularly.

- Complete Khan Academy and Skills Practice assignments.

- Participate in cumulative reviews and practice assessments.

- Ask for assistance when a concept is not fully understood.

DEADLINES & MISSING WORK

Students are expected to meet all assignment deadlines. Repeated missing or incomplete assignments may result in parent/guardian contact, an academic conference, intervention, or other appropriate action.

Students are responsible for completing missed assignments and obtaining class notes and materials after an absence according to the teacher’s established makeup-work procedures.

COLLEGE ALGEBRA GOAL

Success in College Algebra requires more than memorizing formulas or following procedures. Students must learn to analyze functions, solve equations and inequalities, interpret graphs and tables, model real-world situations, connect multiple representations, and justify mathematical conclusions.

Students should develop the independence, accuracy, perseverance, and study habits necessary for success in advanced mathematics and college-level coursework.

The goal is for every student to earn the high school credit required for graduation and to be fully prepared to pass the Final Assessment and earn college credit.
