Analytical Techniques:
X-rays have wavelengths of same order of magnitude as inter atomic distances in crystals. This leads to the production of diffraction patterns which provide evidence of molecular and crystalline structure.
IR spectroscopy is made possible due to bond vibrations (stretching, scissoring, etc.), that change the polarity of the molecule. The symmetric stretch in CO2 is IR in active but CO2 molecules undergo asymmetric stretch as well
