System-Wide Literacy Implementation
Over the past decade, the science of reading has significantly advanced our understanding of how students learn to read. However, translating this research into consistent, system-wide classroom practice remains a complex challenge. This session shares how the Calgary Board of Education is working to bridge this gap by implementing evidence-based literacy practices across a large, diverse school system.
Nicole is a Literacy Specialist with the Calgary Board of Education, currently completing a Master of Education in Educational Studies with a focus on Structured Literacy and Reading Science, and holding a graduate certificate in this field. She is a trained UFLI Facilitator, Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator, and has completed Wilson Reading System certification (IDA Accreditation+). Nicole leads system-wide literacy initiatives and professional learning, supporting K–12 students through evidence-informed instruction and intervention to improve outcomes.
Aileen is a Literacy Specialist with the Calgary Board of Education who is passionate about adolescent literacy. She has a Master of Education in Interdisciplinary Studies, with concentrations in educational neuroscience and student mental health, and brings over 20 years of English Language Arts teaching experience in British Columbia and Alberta. Aileen leads system-wide K–12 literacy initiatives and professional learning that connect research with classroom practice to strengthen literacy outcomes for all learners through evidence-informed instruction, intervention, and assessment.
Terra has been teaching with the Calgary Board of Education for two decades (K-9) and has taught in various educational environments including community schools, specialized classes, and unique settings. She has taken on various leadership roles to support student reading development as a classroom teacher, learning leader, and system Literacy Strategist. She is currently an Inclusive Education Specialist for CBE whose portfolio includes managing the Learning Disabilities/Specific Learning Disorder programming. Terra has a wealth of experience, knowledge, and passion around research-based literacy instruction and finds joy in supporting teachers and school leaders with transforming their practice.
