Miles Wakefield hurried up to get to the house of this Arnold Blair. Blair's advertisement was published in all the daily papers and he was sure that others had seen it too. Blair had a Balzarini for sale and he was selling it cheaply. The price was only $75. Miles couldn't afford to miss such a wonderful chance. He knew he could sell it later with profit. Balzarini, of course, was no great master, but his sunny landscapes caused admiration.
He had to ring at least three times before the door was opened by a boy of about 16. There was something strange about this boy. He looked upset. Miles had the feeling the boy wanted to tell him something, but could not make him¬self do so. Before the boy could make up his mind, a deep voice was heard from somewhere in the house, "Who is it, Davey?"
Miles followed the boy into a small living room. A tall, white-haired man rose from his chair as Miles and Davey entered. Miles saw at once that the man was blind.
"I think you want to set to our business?"
"I don't object, 1 hear you have a Balzarini".
"All right, Davey, you are free for some time".
It was clear that the old man didn't want the boy to hear them discuss the agreement." It's my last hope", said the old man " I had refused to sell the picture many times, until now. It's too dear to me. But I need money. Come, it's in the next room".
Miles followed the old man into the next room. A second later Davey joined them.
"There!" said the old man. "My Balzarini!"
He showed to the opposite wall. Hanging there was a plain black frame. Behind the glass there was nothing. Miles caught the boy's look. It was full of sadness.
"A beautiful canvas, isn't it?" continued the old man. "You'll buy it".
Miles swallowed hard. "Why ... I don't think I can afford to buy it, it's too expensive. I supposed to spend about fifty". The empty frame was taken down, wrapped in a piece of paper and handed to Miles. When Miles had gone with the empty frame under his arm the boy and the grandfather returned to the room where the frame had hung. The boy went to a box in the corner, took out another empty frame, and hung it where the first had been. Then the old man and the boy sat down and began to wait. They were completely ready for the next art dealer.

1.Read the text.Write True or False.
When I was born, my parents were living in a house in a small village about 20 kilometres from the capital. I was three years old when my brother was born and my parents decided that we needed a larger home. We first moved into a rented flat for fifteen months while the new block of flats we were going to move to was being completed. I don’t think my parents liked the rented flat because it was smaller than our old house.
We finally moved into the capital at the beginning of 1988. Our flat wasn’t really large, only 68 square metres, but there was enough room for two adults and two small boys. There were two bedrooms, a cosy living-room with a balcony, a small bathroom and a kitchen, where we used to have the family meals, as well.
I started school the following September, and my brother went to kindergarten. I still remember my first day at school. I even remember that there were 38 students in my class – but of course I’ve long forgotten most of their names by now.
We lived in the same flat all the time I was at school. I only moved house again when I started university in 2003. I decided to study forestry so I had to move to a town near the border. Rents were quite expensive, so I decided to move into a shared flat. Five of us rented a large flat in the city centre, and shared all the housework. I had the time of my life! I’m still living in the same town, but I’m sharing with just one person now. It’s more comfortable but I often miss the big parties we used to have at the other place.
1. The narrator was born in a city
2.The reason the author’s parents didn’t like the rented flat was because it wasn’t spacious enough
3.The author has been keeping in touch with many of his classmates.
4.The author finds it awful that in his university years he had to do the housework by himself.
5.The author liked big parties very much.
6.6. The narrator’s living in other town now.
2.Read the text and write if sentences are true or false.
Young people in Ukraine and Great Britain live different lives.
But nevertheless, their problems have much in common. Probably the most vital problem is choosing a career, which is really difficult. To my mind, the main difficulty is the responsibility you have to take on, because your future life depends on your choice. Also one of the most fundamental problems faced by young people in Ukraine and GB, is unemployment. It means financial worries, frustration and discouragement. Another important problem is the tension which exists between parents and children, or the “generation gap”. I think this problem is inevitable, because every generation is unique in its experiences and values. And parents try to improve their ideas upon their children. One more common problem for young people in Ukraine and GB is love and dating. Some parents today are prepared to give their children some freedom, others are overprotective. For me, the most important problem is that of friendship. Friends are people whose trust and affection you have to win, friendship is art for me We have common interests, likes and dislikes, so having friends is of utter importance for me. As you see, the problems are numerous. Many young people may not be mature enough to cope with them, that's why they go in the direction of crime, drugs, drinking etc. They also compensate for their feelings by revolting against society and adult authority. That's why grown-ups should work together with young people to help them solve these problems. We must remember that the young people are the leaders of tomorrow.
