This was the first photoshop project that I had this year in grade 11. In this piece, I turned the background black and white, so that the image would only focus on the subject, his bright clothes, and the hoop. I put some futuristic triangle designs around him, and I applied a neon like color. I did the same with the name that is behind him.
I used numerous different strategies throughout this design so that I could create a modern aesthetic. First of all, I only used one image, which helps to keep things a lot less busy. Furthermore, I made it so that the cover is filled up with the main image. This makes things a lot more simple. Due to the fact that I am creating an architectural magazine, I feel like the architecture should be on full blast. I decided to use the white space of the image for my magazine title. This is because the observer's attention would be drawn to it. I feel like I did have pretty good spacing because it was only image and text in the main view. I decided to use “Caviar Dreams” as my typeface, which is a very minimalistic and clean font. This, of course, accentuates the modern aesthetic. I also used a very light background color, which was light blue. In the original image the skyline was too distracting so I replaced it with one single calm color. I made sure to align my text as well.
I implemented some pretty good design practices throughout this piece. First of all, I used a very clear photo with a good focal point. As John Mcwade said, you cannot have a good poster without a good focal point. The image was from pexels meaning it would have high quality, and great detail. Due to the flash of light going through the image, I knew that my text had to be going downwards so that it would follow the division into thirds. The typeface that I used is called “book antiqua”, which I used to continue on with the ancient feel. The typeface even has the word “antiqua” in its name. The colors that I used were white, and the sand from the image. I also moved my logo and tagline to the bottom right of the image so that it isn’t distracting.
This was my focal point practice for a poster. I found that this was a very striking image, with a very strong focal point. The canyon is very strong, and directly meets the observer head on. Very nice and vivid colors, which contributes to the poster a lot. For an image as strong as this, there is not much manipulation that needs to be done, which is why I simply but a very thin and elegant white border. For the text, I tried to use a "groovy" font, and also sampled some of the lighter colors that I observed in the image.
