Digital Creation Tools
#EDTC300
I chose a tool called Storybird to create my piece for this assignment. My first thought was to write a children's book, so the tool's title and icon caught my attention. I am interested in children's books because I would love to teach elementary students in the near future.
Using the tool was fairly easy to navigate, plus I did not have to pay for it right away which was a bonus! While entering text I noticed my cursor would not move to the top of the page and I had to figure out how to get my text where I wanted it. Another problem I had was not being able to preview the pictures in a larger size before moving them onto my page. I very much wanted to record the story for audio but i did not see an option for this tool. I did like that it had pictures readily available so that you could easily start your book and you didn't necessarily have to leave the site to upload pictures to create your book. The tool had buttons that were clear and easy to use. I enjoy creating with a tool that is simple and not too difficult to understand.
If I were teaching a Grade 5 class, students could use this book to create their findings in a research project. For example, if they need to do a research project on their community. Storybird allows you to upload your own pictures if need be. Here is the Outcome and Indicator for that specific project.
CC5.1
Compose and create a range of visual, multimedia, oral, and written texts that explore
identity (e.g., What Should I Do)
community (e.g., This is Our Planet)
social responsibility (e.g. Teamwork) and express personal thoughts shaped through inquiry.
Indicators for this outcome
(a)
Create spoken, written, and other representations that include:
a clear and specific message
a logical and coherent organization of ideas
a competent use of language and conventions.
Another scenario might be if I was to teach a Grade 6 Art lesson and the class must research an Indigenous culture and showcase their work using Storybird. Again here is the Outcome and Indicator for the specific project.
CH6.2
Identify ways that First Nations, Métis, and Inuit artists express cultural identity in contemporary work.
(e)
Engage in research (e.g., interviewing a group of women contemporary fancy dancers) to deepen understanding of how cultural identity is expressed in contemporary work.
I created a short children's story called Rabbit's Winter Day. I used the pictures that were provided with the tool, I found them to be cute and worked great for a winter children's story. I was able to change the font and size of my text within the tool which was super easy to use. Click the link below to view my story! Enjoy :)
