As a future teacher, I believe it's important to think outside the box when planning lessons, activities, and assessments. By exploring options using technology, you can find different ways of keeping students engaged. Kahoot is a web-based platform for educators, students, and anyone who wants to get informed and also have fun while learning.
I chose Kahoot for this project because it is a fun way to assess with students. It also tracks a report that you can use for your marking needs. Students will like the switch up from a typical pencil and paper assessment to a colorful, exciting, technology-based assessment.
Grade 2 students will learn about the Zones of Regulation in their Health Unit. Here is the curricular outcome I would use for this project:
USC2.1
Demonstrate a basic understanding of how thoughts, feelings, and actions influence health and well-being.
SAMR
Substitution—Students are using a Chromebook rather than a pencil and paper for assessment. Traditionally, a pencil and paper were used for assessment, but now, with technology things are changing. Along with technology, teachers are learning different ways to differentiate their assessments with other tools as well. Students can log into Kahoot from Chromebooks and do their assessments either together as a class or individually. Some students have trouble with assessments when it comes to paper and pencil, they may feel anxious, with a Chromebook they may feel more engaged in the assessment and less anxious.
Students - I would use Kahoot with grades 2 and up. Students will need to know basic laptop skill like using the keyboard, keypad, know how to get to the internet and follow instructions. Kahoot would be good for students who struggle with paper and pencil assessments.
Ease of Use - Kahoot has easy-to-read fonts and it is colorful and inviting. It is easy to explore with the mouse and items do not open when you hover over them which is nice. This program is manageable for both teachers and students.
Cost - You do not have to pay to use Kahoot but you do have to create an account using your email if you want to create , host, and use the basics with Kahoot. If you want to use Kahoot's add-ons, you do need to sign up and pay. They have a recent sale at the moment, it is $3.99 for a month.
Teaching Functions - Kahoot is great for quizzes when you want to try adding some engagement in the classroom. You can also create a group or classroom so you can interact and play together. Kahoot+ (which you need to pay for at a cheap rate) has slides for lessons you can create, interactive quizzes, an AI generator for quizzes, courses, and more.
Organizational Issues - Depending on the school, I'd say most schools would support teachers in using this program to an extent. I doubt they would purchase the Kahoot+ for teachers to use in their classroom on a regular basis.
Networking/Novelty - Kahoot gives teachers the opportunity to share their own Kahoots they have created with other teachers or educators. You can also give access to your own Kahoots so people can edit them and make them their own. Teachers can share a link to assessments students have done on Kahoot, that link can also be shared with others online to show student success using Kahoot.
Security/Privacy - Kahoot has a privacy icon in the settings menu under your profile. You can turn on notifications if you want Kahoot to notify you when someone shares a Kahoot with you, features your Kahoot with others, shares your Kahoot with others, or favorites your Kahoot. Kahoot does not ask for extensive information when creating an account, but you do have the option to add more info if you'd like. Kahoot does not ask for extensive information about students. No pop-ups when using Kahoot.
This lesson plan is a task assessment for a Grade 2 Health Unit. Students will sign into Kahoot individually and do an assessment as a class to complete their unit in Health. The teacher can see a report of individual student assessments, the report can be used as a link or it can be printed.
Here is a video I made that aligns with my lesson plan posted above.
