This paper explores the world of medieval Europe. Through ‘Rise of the Modern-West’, students are introduced to a period of transition from a feudal society to one based on the capitalist mode of production. One of the most important periods for cultural, social, political and economic development in Europe and the rest of the world, students get to delve into the realm of the Renaissance, the Reformation, Scientific and Enlightenment Movements and most importantly the dawn of a capitalist society coupled with the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution. We also see the emergence of parliamentary institutions (the English Civil War), the struggle to initiate liberal thought and ideology and a tussle between mighty European naval powers in a bid to achieve greater colonial/imperialist exploits, gather colonial ‘knowledge’, strengthen their administrative institutions and bolster mercantile ideologies. An attempt has been made to make most of the readings available at one place for the students. It is, however, possible to find that some articles are topic-specific and others relevant to more than one topic. Therefore we encourage you to study all the readings.
