Instruction will begin with an assessment of your child's abilities in multiple measures related to reading. We'll assess your child's strengths and weaknesses and utilize a structured approach to address their needs. An ongoing commitment to weekly sessions will be required, so that skills can be introduced and practiced at a pace that best meets your child's needs.
Your child will be given a binder containing practice pages in reading, spelling and handwriting, as well as lessons in syllable patterns and morphology. At-home skills practice is encouraged between sessions.
Ideally, O-G instruction can be most beneficial to students in early elementary school (Grades 1-3) who show signs of reading struggle and may or may not have been diagnosed with a language-based learning disability like dyslexia. This approach works just as well for older students who are struggling, but the pace and materials may be altered to reflect age appropriateness.
Cost depends on the number of sessions per week per semester. Payment is made using a tuition model, with equal payments due monthly.
Vocabulary and Comprehension
Accurately decoding text materials is essential, but as students progress through the grades an understanding of what they're reading is also critical to school success. Words often have more than one meaning and phrases can be literal or figurative, making for much confusion for some students. Utilizing a variety of materials to guide students in strengthening their language skills related to word meaning, background knowledge, grammar, syntax, and expression provides students with a solid literacy foundation with which to build upon as they progress in school and encounter new learning experiences in the content areas.
