Did you know that executive function skills are not fully developed until we are in our mid-twenties?
"For many students with executive skills weaknesses, lack of motivation has as much to do with their inability to apply themselves to academic tasks than lack of cognitive or metacognitive skills." Coaching Students with Executive Skills Deficits (2012) by Peg Dawson and Richard Guare, Guilford Press, p. 16.
What do we do when he/she has fallen behind and we don't know where to begin?
For some teens, making the transition to middle and high school is not easy. They become overwhelmed by having to juggle multiple teachers, assignments, and tasks. Add sports, jobs, family events, and other outside activities and it can be easy to fall behind.
Coaching these kids is often a matter of breaking their lists of to-do's down into manageable pieces. Then, we introduce them to tools and strategies to help them get and stay organized, develop a work plan, and strengthen the ability to become independent learners. It's a process that can be learned!
It requires a team effort! We will work together with your teen, his/her teachers, and you to get them back on track.
Student buy-in is crucial and it will require an ongoing commitment to success.
