As an educator, the topic of Education is extremely important to me. I firmly believe that every citizen of Rainbow City has an interest in education. The Rainbow City Council, working with the Board of Education and other governmental agencies, has the opportunity to positively impact the educational experience for the residents of Rainbow City.
ENHANCED INTERNET SUPPORT
Hopefully, the lockdown of 2020 is close to ending, with schools planning on starting on time. However, if and when we face a situation like last year, I firmly believe the Rainbow City Library could be declared essential and kept open to provide Internet access to students and parents who have poor or no Internet access. This could be accomplished with appropriate social distancing and sanitary protection in place for staff and residents. Rainbow City has a franchise agreement with Comcast, which guarantees them a geographical monopoly over Cable TV and Cable/Internet. The Rainbow City Council should use its leverage to work with Comcast to provide Internet hotspots throughout public areas in Rainbow City.
SRO PROGRAM
Federal and state grants are available to enhance the SRO programs in our local schools. These officers play a tremendous role in the school environment. These grants could be used to train these officers in Mental Health and Suicide Prevention to help them serve the students/schools even more. Potentially hiring an additional SRO whose primary purpose would be Mental Health. This would not replace the current SRO program but enhance it. The community working hand in hand with both Public and Private Educational institutions is a model that has proven successful time and time again.
