This lesson plan is for teachers of middle school aged students. It is a generic version of the Raising Shellfish lesson plan that you can adapt to your classroom needs. Teachers, this is a lesson plan for teaching your class how to raise shellfish:
1. Dig a hole in the ground
2. Go to the sea and fill the hole with water
3. Put some shellfish in the hole, and wait until they grow
4. Dig them up again, and eat them
As it happens, that is exactly what people do in Bremer Bay, a town on the southwest coast of Australia. The "shellfish" are scallops; most of the work is done by students at a local high school.
What You Need
* **Deep Bins:** Students love making their own aquariums, and the bins can be used to raise the shellfish.
* **Shellfish:** The shellfish come in a variety of sizes so students can watch them grow.
* **Water Test Kits:** These are necessary to assess the water quality for your shellfish.
* **Lesson Plans:** These will help you get started on your tank set up and provide you with background information necessary for success as you raise oysters and other shellfish in the classroom.
