Applied Shellfish Farming Course

The Applied Shellfish Farming Course is a new course at the University of Maine at Machias. This course provides students with the tools they need to decision-make in the aquaculture industry, especially shellfish aquaculture.


Growers, consultants and regulators will benefit from this course's in-depth look at how to find good sites for shellfish farming and how to develop them into productive farms. The course also looks at issues of permitting, marketing, and other important aspects of shellfish farming.

Now accepting applications for the Applied Shellfish Farming Course, offered in conjunction with the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science at Stony Brook University.


The course will be taught by Dr. Kevin Johnson and a team of scientists from IOCS partnering organizations. Students will learn about shellfish biology and conservation, farm planning and management, water quality, shellfish hatchery operations, and much more.


The course is a 3-credit hour graduate seminar that will be held in Stony Brook University's Marine Sciences Research Center. Coursework includes lectures, small group discussions, field trips to local farms, and hands-on laboratory experiences. The fee for the course is $3,000.00**


The Applied Shellfish Farming Course is a course that we run in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. The course is aimed at those interested in starting a shellfish farming business, farmers looking to diversify or anyone who would like to learn more about this interesting industry.
