Having played musical instruments as a child, I always enjoyed Music lessons in both primary and secondary school. I found it to be a 'break' from the more rigid, academic structure of the core subjects as well as an opportunity for creative expression. This is something I have also acknowledged whilst studying the current content and pedagogy of Music in seminars. During the first week of my second-year placement, I was lucky enough to observe the teaching of Music within a Year 5 class where the class using a platform called ‘Charanga’ for their lessons. This section of the unit saw the children performing ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ using instruments and singing the lyrics together as a whole class. This was then recorded as part of their final performance. They had been working on this project for a couple of weeks and they were very happy with how it turned out. It was really rewarding to see how proud the children were of what they had created and I realised how much the subject bonded them for even a short amount of time. It was also comforting to see the different resources available to schools for the teaching of Music as this was something I initially felt anxious about. On my consolidation placement, I taught Music on a weekly basis using the Charanga platform again. Leading the sessions instead of supporting them has provided me with the confidence to plan and teach a sequence of Music lessons by myself.
