In 2018, a Destination ImagiNation team Service Learning project involved a community partnership with a local non-profit, Crossroads Community Outreach Center. We initially partnered with them to create low-cost, healthy meals to serve to those in need in an effort to expand community gardens to those experiencing economical challenges. We expanded this partnership over the next half decade to include serving meals during their Wednesday services, providing care packages and lunches, and the students were able to speak about their service work and play music. We also hosted a Healthy Food Drive which brought carloads of donation items to the center every year, providing food for those in need during the holiday season. For years, our campus donated clothing and coats to community members who were utilizing the services Crossroads offered. Four Destination ImagiNation Service Learning teams cooked and served healthy meals to participants, or donated time to help with donations. Through this partnership, students were able to learn the importance of philanthropy and service work in their own communities. I coordinated these efforts, including transportation of goods, networking with volunteers, and ensuring students and parents knew and followed protocols for safety in order to participate in a meaningful way.
