In 2022, I started leading 3D printing competitions through participation in the PrintLab (weareprintlab.com/) Makeable competitions. This competition support students as they create inventions for people with disabilities through the use of 3D Design and technology. Students participating in this competition learned coding, 3D design, community outreach, and how assistive devices help people who are differently abled. Students were encouraged to find a team "champion" or inspiration story that guided their design. The team "champion" had to be willing to speak publicly about his or her need for assistive technology. Our teams found a student on campus who inspired their team design, and they named their team after the team champion. Students customized every part of their designs around what their champion liked, from their team shirts to their mascot, colors, and specifics of each design. Working with students on campus to find a team champion and motivation story helped bring our campus closer together. Students who were designing the assistive devices were able to understand on a personal level how their teamwork, creativity, and innovation helped peers they knew, and it made their work more meaningful.
