GLAAD was founded in 1985 as a response to the media's inaccurate and exaggerated coverage of the AIDS epidemic in the U.S. Formerly known as the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, GLAAD's mission is to advocate for cultural change, and increase acceptance for the LGBTQ community.
