The CTYHD at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is dedicated to providing gender-affirming healthcare for transgender and gender-nonconforming children, adolescents, young adults and their families. The CTYHD rejects the gatekeeper model of care and focuses on how to help our patients and families in the least restrictive environment possible.
Planning for the first Children’s Hospital began at a YMCA town meeting in what is now Downtown Los Angeles. CHLA was founded in 1901. In 1920, the Department of Physiotherapy opens for children with polio in need of physical rehabilitation. In 1928, The first children’s heart clinic opens at Children’s Hospital. In 1932 , the hospital becomes affiliated with the Keck School of Medicine of USC. In 1962, the hospital expands and changes its name is legally changed from Childrens Hospital Society of Los Angeles to Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. In 1963, the Division of Adolescent Medicine was established, where the CTYHD was later formed. CHLA has been ranked among the top ten hospitals in the US about 6 times.
According to Johanna Olson-Kennedy, MD, medical director of the Center for Transyouth Health and Development at CHLA, she received an intramural award—supported by private philanthropy and other sources—for $160,000 over two years. She used the money to fund the early stages of a cross-sex hormone study.
In 2015, the National Institutes of Health awarded $5.7M for a five-year, multicenter study which will be the first in the U.S. to evaluate the long-term outcomes of medical treatment for transgender youth.
