Field Trip

View south to Haslingden and Upper Irwell valley

An optional field trip will take place on Sunday 7th January. The fieldtrip will examine evidence for glacial and post-glacial evolution of the Upper Irwell Valley south of Rawtenstall and Haslingden, followed by a visit to Little Woolden Moss, part of the Chat Moss peat complex, and an important site for Holocene environmental reconstruction and present-day peatland reconstruction. The itinerary is below.

The field trip cost will be £35 for transport. There will be a lunch stop at a local pub (not included in the field trip cost).

Itinerary


09.30  Depart Chester St, Manchester M1 5GD

10.30 – 12.00  Lumb Mill, Helmshore: Irwell gorge, Palaeolake Rawtenstall, Late-Glacial site, Zeppelin crater.

12.00 – 13.00  Woodcliffe / adjoining landslides and glacial sediments

12.50  LUNCH - Ramsbottom

14.15  Depart for Little Woolden Moss 

15.00 - 16.00  Little Woolden Moss - - Holocene paleoenvironments, dendrochronology and peatland restoration

16.30 – 17.00 Return to Chester St, Manchester.
