Burning Ember

Pyrates: Burning Ember is a YA-Adult book set 2000+ years into the future. The world is mostly water, with islands scattered around the four oceans. But rather than cyberpunk or techno, the world looks more like the 1700-1800s, with people crossing the seas in old-fashioned style boats that resemble those found during the golden age of piracy.

Kasai, a 17-year-old, is forced from his village after it's destroyed and sets to sea to find his father. He lands in the sights of a powerful pyrate with a strange focus on him, and is forced to flee. But after a confrontation, Kasai unlocks his new abilities and must learn to hone them before he's targeted again. But after another fight, he realizes that he is no match for his enemy but soon discovers that it doesn't matter. His family is in danger and he must fight to protect them.
