Since visiting an art gallery is out of the question during the Stay-at-Home orders, the folks over at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles have come up with a creative way to keep art lovers occupied — by challenging them to re-create famous artwork at home.
With this projects students worked to recreate a famous piece of artwork with the objects and people at their home. Below are a selection of 15 of the best pieces submitted as well as the student's write up about why they picked this piece of art and the challenges they faced when recreating it.

This artwork is called The Milkmaid, it was made by Johannes Vermeer in the year of 1657-1658. The reason I choose this art because I knew exactly where to take the photo and I had the right materials to use for my photo. My process in making my photo is using my dad's old clothes, using my families eating table by the kitchen, and just bringing in some food from the fridge.
The challenges I had for this project was finding the right angle to take the picture and getting enough light, and what worked well was the location because it was the only perfect place to do it.

The original painting is called The Son of Man. It was made in 1964 by Rene Magritte. I chose this artwork because it seemed really unique to me.
My process in making it was to make the man mostly made from foods like rice, apple, beans, chia, and tomato.
The only challenge I had was when I added the tomato. What worked well was the chia and rice for the outfit.

I recreated Untitled (Self Portrait) by Sally Mann. It was created in 2012. I chose this piece to recreate because it stood out to me the most. The way the faces are over-exposed mixed with the plain black background makes a really swanky "ghostly" effect.
The original piece has a hauntingly beautiful touch to it, which really drew me in. It was pretty difficult to recreate, to say in the least-- I had a whole lot of trouble with posing and setting/finding a plain black backdrop to work with. I had alot of fun with the editing though! :-)

The art that I replicated is called “Chef Offer 2” by an Iranian artist, Afarin Sajedi. I like her art in general because of how seemingly strange, meaningful, and rad they are (you should check her out).
Anyways, the things I struggled here was mainly finding something to wear as the headscarf but I ended up using one of my sweaters and it was a tad complicating to put on.

The original photo is a Mexican artist named Frida Kahlo she's very known for her portraits and self portraits. The picture I chose is when Frida was a little girl before she was a very famous known artist. The picture was taken in the year 1920 when she was around 13 years old. I decided to pick that photo because not many people knew her life before she became an artist.
One of the struggles I had was not being able to be satisfied with the pictures I took because I expected a little more. Something that turned out very well in my opinion was my dress, they're both first communion dresses and are pretty similar. In the picture she had a dress, candle, and a plant which I added to my photo to make it similar. Overall I enjoyed doing this.
Cindy Martinez
The artwork I decided to recreate was a Self-Portrait of Frida Kahlo. The artist was Frida Kahlo she paints herself because she is often alone and because she is the subject she knows best.
I picked her because 60 years after her death, her spirit still inspires admirers young and old. I really don't know when she made this painting.
I had some trouble with the necklace she had so I had to improvise.
Leslie Contreras
The photo that I recreated was Girl With Death Mask (1939) by Frida Kahlo. I choose this photo because I thought it would be easy to recreate.
So of the things that I had a challenge with was trying to copy the mask and trying to get my sister to stay still. Also there was wind so it mad it harder.
At the end the I think I did okay with the recreation of the photo.

The name of this art is The Lovers Stretched Canvas. It was made in 1928 by the artist named Rene Magritte. I chose this piece because It seemed interesting and I had the items to do it.
Making it wasn’t hard but positioning the faces is something I struggled with, but what worked for me would my mom letting use her mannequin head and helping me recreate the picture.

This is a Getty photo challenge of Woman Ironing 1904 by Pablo Picasso. This image caught my attention during the time of quarantine because she looks empty and may of us can relate as we stay home in quarantine and don't have much social interaction.
The ironing added on because when the time comes to be released back to do things we will have that empty, dead feeling and not want to do much of anything. Finding a wall/backdrop was the challenging part because my house is full of tan walls everywhere. What worked well was my mom had a white dress that fit the woman in the picture. This was an interesting project to create.
Justin Brooks
I decided to recreate the photo Le Géant (Paul Nougé) by René Magritte. The photo was pretty interesting to me. I really liked the scenery and the subject of the photo.
The man in the photo is a Belgian poet named Paul Nougé. He was also a photographer as well.
The part I struggled on was finding a good space in my house to take the photo since there isn't a lot of empty space.
Raul Perez
I decided to recreate the "love is in the air (flower thrower)" art piece by Banksy that was first made in 2003. I decided to recreate this because I had a matching blank white wall that would make it easy and fun to recreate, The hardest part was part of this assignment was getting the flowers for the picture and editing the picture so that it is all black and white except the yellow in the flowers.

The piece I recreated is called Virgin Annunciate by Antonello de Messina. It was painted in 1467 and it shows Mary being interrupted while at her reading by the Angel of the Annunciation.
I'm gonna be honest and say I chose this picture at first because it was simple, but I read about it a little and I do like the piece itself.
I'd say I struggled with the lighting. I tried to edit the brightness but it would just look weird so I left it. I also struggled even taking the picture because it took me forever.

I chose this photo since I could find the items easily at my house and I thought it was cool looking. The title of the photo is Untitled 1980 by Park Hyun-ki. I really like black and white photography. At first I struggled with the lighting. I was taking the picture in the afternoon and there was too much light shining down on the area. Once I waited till the evening the lighting was a lot better.
Elias Bracken
I chose Paul Cezanne work, Still Life with Apples, 1893-1894. This artwork has one of my favorite fruits. The apples are nice and shiny. I had trouble with the lighting. Having apples at home helped my process.
Ariyona Thomas
For my photo I chose The Old Guitarist 1903, by Pablo Picasso. I chose this artwork because I felt I could recreate it well with my baby brother.
My biggest challenge with this was getting him to pose like the original painting. The background worked well in my opinion.
