The airport costs us more than it is worth. Only 32% of Southampton airport's expenditure (2015 non-wage) is within the Solent region. It spends more than 6 times as much in Greater London (within the M25) as it does in Southampton (2016). Yet Southampton and Eastleigh get most of the airport's noise and pollution ......and will get more.
Economics (2015):
£206 m - the annual contribution of urban woodland to the UK economy (National Office of statistics) - not including CO2 uptake;
£161 m - the annual contribution of Southampton airport to the UK economy (Steer Davies Gleave for SIAL ) - not including CO2 production. Interestingly the airport's publicity team present this (wrongly) as a contribution to the 'local' economy.
