Anyone can be an activist.
There are different kinds of activism:
Occupying space in your work fields
Earning and owning your education
Using your voice in a meeting
Standing up to verbal and physical assault on the streets
Educating your racist uncle at the dinner table
Your existence and your representation
Your allyship

Activity One
Make a List of Causes you want to focus on
Narrow the list down to your top 5 (or less)
Circle/Pick ONE specifically you'd like to focus on
Narrow down the cause
Example: Racism → anti-black racism → police brutality → lack of accountability for black deaths in police custody → in my local area
TIP: Try narrowing down by asking questions of who, where, when, how
Activity Two
Create a list of the skills, resources, privileges, knowledge and experiences that you can bring/contribute as a person (does not have to be activist related)
Choose your TOP 3 (THREE) and write them down.
Examples: Money — Time — Space/Environment — Printer — First-hand Knowledge or Experience — Artistic Skills — Editing Skills — Communication Skills — Comfortable with Emails — Research Skills — Teaching Skills — Web Design — Multi-lingual — Sign-Language — Public Speaking Skills — Baking or Cooking Skills — Transcribing Skills — Events Organizing — Sewing Skills — Care-Taking Skills — Listening Skills — Social Media Management — First-Aid Skills — Poster Design and Promotional Skills — Large/Decent Social Media Following — Project Management — Own a vehicle & license — ANYTHING!
THINK - What do you not have? What people might you need to collaborate with? What resources or skills did you not consider before but think you might need?
Activity Three
Write down in three columns: (A) Yes, this is me (B) No, this definitely is not me (C) Depends on the day
Categorize the following words within those three columns:
Organizer
Connector
Teacher
Speaker
Researcher
Healer
Crafter
Risk-Taker
Communicator
Add any other words that describe roles that reflect your personality (Advocate, influencer, etc)
Add any other words that DON'T describe... personality. It's good to identify an set boundaries and limitations for yourself.
Look at the words in your "Depends" column - What changes the "Depends" to "Yes or "No?
Example: "Public Speaking would be a yes if... it's in a classroom or small-group setting"
Activity Four
Think about your specific cause and write down ideas you have for how each of these four areas might help with iy:

Personalizing Emails
Volunteering
Discussing with & Encouraging others

Advocacy & Direct Action (examples below)
Researching activist groups & projects
Joining a group/program/project instead of creating one

Provide medical, child care or legal support for protestors/volunteers
Create graphics
Help fact-check, provide first-hand knowledge or experience
Script/Create Newsletters

How are you going to track your progress?
Does your goal help your cause?
When is your deadline?
TIP: If these goals seem too big, split them into smaller goals instead!
Examples:
- Get XXXXX added to the High School Curriculum
- Organize a Fundraiser to raise $XXXX for XXXXX
- Run an awareness campaign for XXXXX
- Get a job in the XXXXX charity/NGO
Activity Six
Write a list of tangible things you can do/actions you can take to move towards your goal.Scenario: You have noticed homophobic comments going through your school, unchallenged by staff.Goal: Have all teachers at your school be given comprehensive training in how to respond.Long-term Goal: Create an inclusive environment for all staff and students.Steps you might take:
Research organizations that might already do this type of training.
Collect testimonials from students who have suffered as a result of lack of training.
Schedule a meeting with your headteacher to discuss the proposal.
Discover what current training is available to teachers at the school in other ares of pastoral care.
Research the laws in your area, re: anti-discrimination and see if any of them apply.
